A Successful Start For Beverleys Millinery Workshops

This autumn, we decided to dabble in offering a few millinery classes to our customers, budding milliners and a cluck of hens!

Hen Party Fascinator Workshop

We started our series of classes by hosting a hen party at the Jam Tree in Fulham. The Hen organisers had booked out the top floor of this quirky bar, with nibble and cocktails flowing for a mad hatter’s themed day. We set up a huge array of materials and several ideas for headpieces and set to making a selection of fascinators under Beverley’s guidance.

Several of the hens wore their creations the following week at the wedding itself!

We then ran a couple of evening classes at the Farnham malting’s.

Winter Hat Making Course

We ran this course over three evenings and had four students learning the art of millinery, we started by learning to block the hat shapes using wool felt hoods. I think all the students were surprised by the physical exertion required to pull and shape the felts!

The following week we focused on making some moulded felt flowers for the trims, then wiring and binding the edges of the hats, this required a little homework from the students to finish binding the hats, insisting that at least for their first hats all stitching should be done by hand no matter how much they wanted to machine stitch the bind!

The final week we added the inner hat band and had fun with the positioning of the trims, each student came out with very different hats and designs, which is so nice to see everyone’s individual takes on design and colour. I also really enjoyed being able to advise on positioning of trimmings and how to get designs to work successfully from a visual aesthetics point of view.

Fascinator Making workshop

The fascinator making workshop was very much the same format as the hen party, except that we had a lot less participants and a lot more time! This meant that each student could really think about the design they were making and I could break the class to show particular techniques in detail that were requested by the students.

All the girls made fantastic but very different fascinators, from a creation for Royal Ascot, to a headpiece for afternoon tea and a bridal styled piece to use in a styled wedding photoshoot.

I really enjoyed running these classes and the feedback on them has been great, everyone enjoyed themselves and came out with really wearable pieces.

We are looking to run more classes in the coming months so do keep your eyes peeled on our Events Page

In the meantime if you would be interested in attending any of Beverleys millinery workshops or have us host a hen party fascinator class in the future please get in touch on info@beverleyedmondson.co.uk .

Hi Beverley,

I just wanted to say how much I loved your hat making class! I am feeling very inspired 🙂 Thank you so much (also for bringing all the supplies and tidying up – sorry we made such a mess!). Next time I need a hat I will definitely be either coming to you or, if I am feeling foolhardy, trying to make my own…
